We use sweet potato as the base of our treats. Full of fabulous fibre which can help eliminate toxins from the body, sweet potatoes provide an antioxidant called beta-carotene which your dog converts to Vitamin A.
Vitamin A is essential to help support eye health, bone growth, healthy skin and reproduction.
Sweet potatoes are gentle on your dog’s digestive system and provide many other nutrients such as Vitamin C, B6, potassium, calcium & iron.
Coconut flour is grain free (and therefore gluten free). This hypoallergenic flour is an easily digestible source of protein which is essential in the process of cell renewal to support healthy skin, bone and fur.
It is rich in fibre to help support the normal transit of food through the digestive system and to help bulk up the stool, supporting the correct elimination of the anal glands.
The lovely fats in coconut flour also help to support cell renewal and help to maintain healthy joints.
Pumpkin seeds are a powerhouse of nutrients containing protein, fibre, healthy fats, amino acids, iron, copper, phosphorus, niacin, calcium, potassium, magnesium and zinc.
Pumpkin seeds are also used as a natural wormer. They contain an amino acid called cucurbitin which paraylzes the worms and eliminates them from the digestive tract. They can also help to support good heart health and to lower blood sugar levels.
Parsley is already well known for helping to maintain fresh breath but it is also packed full of chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll is the compound that makes plants green and allows plants to convert energy from light and has a very similar chemical structure to haemoglobin. This is an element in blood that helps transport oxygen to cells in the body. So when your dog eats grass or parsley, she is actually helping to support that process. Chlorophyll has lots of other uses in your dog’s body including promoting digestive health, helping to detox the liver and digestive system and building the immune system.
Parsley can be used as a diuretic which can help arthritic dogs with waste elimination.
Beetroot is another great source of fibre to help support the normal transit of food through the digestive system. However, it’s fabulous colour immediately tells you that it also contains some ever-useful antioxidants. Antioxidants help to protects cells against the damage which can lead to disease and are in abundance in brightly coloured vegetables.
Beetroots also contain prebiotic fibre which is used to feed the good bacteria in your dog’s intestines. They also contain magnesium, sodium and potassium; all essential for your dog’s health.
Spirulina is a microscopic algae which contains a high level of protein together with Vitamins B1, 2 & 3, beta carotene and the essential fatty acid, GLA.
Studies confirm that spirulina enhances detoxification and natural cleansing. Our dogs are subjected to all sorts of toxic chemicals in the air, in their water and in their food as well as any medications. Spirulina has a unique collection of phytonutrients which can help to cleanse the body. It also stimulates the body’s immune system,
notably natural killer cells which can help to fight cancer.
The colour of spirulina is significant too with high levels of a blue pigment called phycocyanin which has been shown to inhibit the
development of cancer.
